As remote working becomes more relevant than ever, Team 4 look into how we all get prepared to keep our businesses moving with our team members working from home rather than the office.

Things to consider when setting up:

First things first, you need the right tools in place to be able to work efficiently. Have you got all the software you need on your home computers? Do you know all of your vital log in information? Have you got remote access to your business server, if you need it? Is your internet connection fast enough? It’s always best to have a trial run before committing to working from home so that you have the security of knowing that you can sign on and get working.

One of the hardest things to do when working from home is avoiding distractions. You might have a delivery that needs a signature or a pet that is so excited to have you home; but doesn’t realise that a cute little face and a paw on your lap isn’t helping you be productive! You could try separating yourself into a different room and keeping the door closed or, if that isn’t possible, maybe try some noise cancelling headphones as a way to help filter out those distractions.

Next on the checklist to consider is: how do you stay in touch with your team? Consider using software that allows you all to be logged in and able to communicate, such as Microsoft Teams or Slack. These allow you to instant message your team mates, share files and call one another to keep in touch. Make sure your team are trained up on how to use the key features to keep everyone in the loop with updates. Working remotely can become quite lonely, so having regular conference calls or check-ins with your team can help to boost morale and productivity.

Does your company have a remote working policy? This is definitely something to consider so that your team have guidelines on what is expected from them while they are working away from the office.

One final thing we think is important to consider is how do you stay motivated and productive, but also how do you switch off at the end of the working day? The lines between your professional and personal life can get blurred as your home space becomes your work space. Set yourself goals to achieve each day to keep you focussed, then make sure you sign off and switch off your devices, perhaps even keeping them out of sight, once your day is complete.
